Need for Speed: Bentley debuts world’s fastest production SUV

Bentley Bentayga Speed is headed to Geneva at 190 mph

The Bentley Bentayga has never been knocked for being too slow, but the Anglo-Germanic marque will use the Geneva motor show to unveil a version of the Bentayga that it bills as the world’s fastest production SUV. The new Bentayga Speed boasts a top speed of 190 mph, courtesy of a bump in power that brings its output up to 626 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, up from a mere 600 hp. Besides the top speed, another result of this power boost is a quicker 0-62 mph time of 3.9 seconds versus 4.1 seconds in the base W12 model.

How will you be able to tell the Bentayga Speed apart from other Bentaygas as they pass you at perfectly legal triple-digit speeds? The fast version will feature a tailgate spoiler, body-colored side skirts, dark-tint headlights, dark-tint radiator and bumper grilles, as well as a special 22-inch 10-spoke wheel design that will be exclusive to this model. The wheels will be offered in three finishes: Silver, dark tint and black.

“Customers can personalize the Bentayga Speed to their own requirements with a range of exclusive options,” Bentley says. “Among them are carbon-ceramic brakes, 22-way adjustable front seats with massage function, carbon-fiber fascia panels, Bentley rear-seat entertainment (RSE) and mood lighting.”

On the inside, Bentley has given this version of its second-ever SUV “swooshes” around the door handles, the lower console and on the edge of the seat cushions and bolsters. The automaker has also added a new contrast stitching pattern on the diamond quilted leather surfaces, as well as a special illuminated treadplate badge. This version of the Bentayga will also be the first to receive Alcantara faux-suede trim — other versions of the SUV apparently did not offer this material.

“Uniquely in the Speed, the Sport mode has been recalibrated to enhance response from the W12 engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as the suspension and Bentley Dynamic Ride. The effect is a more dynamic and engaging drive,” Bentley says.

One optional item that buyers of this Bentayga won’t be able to order anymore are the Bentley wings embroidered at the top of the seat backrests — on the Bentayga Speed, they have been replaced with the word “Speed,” lest you forget which version of the Bentayga you ordered.

Will other automakers be tempted to challenge the Bentayga Speed when it comes to top speed? The Cayenne Turbo could be a prime candidate with some tweaking — Porsche’s SUV can already do 178 mph, but we have a feeling that it’s keeping some power in reserve since one publication already pushed it to 190 mph on the autobahn. The Lamborghini Urus — yet another Volkswagen AG machine — can also top 190 mph pretty easily as it’s already officially rated at 189.5 mph. It’s not a long jump from 189.5 to 195 mph, and we would be surprised if Lambo development drivers haven’t already done it.

Those in need of faster commute times will be able to order the Bentayga Speed later this year. Pricing will be announced closer to the start of sales.
